BATTICALOA

Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. On a flat coastal plain boarder the Indian Ocean in the east occupies the central part of the eastern Sri Lanka. Its average elevation is around 5 meters. The city has the beauty of the spit of land masses separated from the mainland by the brackish lagoon and small islands lies in the midst of the lagoon which traverses through the district extending 73.5 km. to Verugal in the North from Batticaloa city and also extending from the city 35.2 km. from the South up to Thuraineelavanai.
S.O.Canagaratnam [the Chief Mudliyar, Eastern Province during the colonial rule] referring to Batticaloa says: “The whole district formed part of the Kandyan Provinces when the Sinhalese kings held sway and Batticaloa was then known as Puliyanduwa.” And also observes “One of the saddest features in the history of this District is the decay of the Sinhala population in the West and South. At one time there were flourishing and populace Sinhalese villages here, as is evidenced by the ruins and remains dotted about in this part of the country.”
